2007 Women Who Write Contest Winners

Women Who Write 2007 Contest Winners 

On Friday, September 22, 2006, Women Who Write held its Tenth Annual Poetry and Short Prose Awards Ceremony at the Spalding Mansion, Spalding University Campus, Louisville, Kentucky.  The ceremony was held  as a main event of the first Kentucky Women's Book Festival, co-sponsored by Women Who Write.  The event catering was sponsored by Follett Books.
 
The winners have been published in the current volume of Calliope and read excerpts from their winning works during the ceremony.
 
Special thanks goes to contest judges The Writers Bloc (Prose) and Barbara Blackburn(Poetry).
 

Contest Judges
 
Barbara Blackburn, poetry judge for this year's contest, graduated from the University of Louisville with a master's degree in linguistics and completed the course work and exams for a doctorate in English.  As an associate professor of English at Jefferson Community College, she taught composition, literature and creative writing.
 
She and a colleague organized the Jefferson Poetry Workshop, which included faculty, students, and staff.  The group met monthly to read and critique each other's poetry.  The Workshop also held an annual poetry contest.  Her own poetry has appeared in a number of journals over the years and her poem "Shorebirds" took 1st prize in the 2005 Women Who Write poetry/short prose contest.  She has also published children's stories in Jack and Jill and Children's Playmate magazines.  Recently, she completed her first novel, a psychological thriller set in Alaska.
 
The Writers Bloc, a group of writers in and around the Salem, Indiana area, were the prose judges.  The group meets every two weeks to read and discuss works in progress.  Their writing includes memoirs and novels to poetry and children's books.  Several have published works; others write for their own pleasure or to leave a legacy for their families.  Current active members are: 
 
Nancy Chambers, Jane Clark, Ella Finn Henley, Mary Grigsby, John Hammond, Sarah Johnson, Patty Little, Lillian Loughran, Marji Morris, Alice McGinnis, Jeannette Nelson, Roseanne Quatroke, and Janice Straley.
