In 2004, Women Who Write held its Eighth Annual Poetry and Short Prose Contests. The winners of each are published
in the current volume of Calliope. Special thanks goes to contest judges Pamela Steel (Poetry) and Jacqueline
Powell (Prose), as well as co-sponsors Borders Books & Music and the University of Louisville Women's Center.

Contest Judges
Jacqueline Powell, our prose judge, has been a teacher in the Jefferson County Public Schools for 33
years. She has worked as a curriculum writer on Language Arts Scope and Sequence charts, and has written curriculum
for Speed Museum, Junior Achievement, American Red Cross and various civic groups. She has been selected as a leader
by National Geographic Magazine and conducts training for teachers. Jackie has written a manual on Women Who Work at
U.C.L.A. in Berkley and served as department chair in English and social studies at various schools. She has also taught
creative writing in JCPS Adult Education. Currently, she teaches women's studies, African-American history, and world
civilization at Atherton High School.
Pamela Steel, this year's poetry judge, is a native of West Virginia and a teacher in the Jefferson
County School System. She is a graduate of Spalding University with a master's in fine arts. In 2002, she won
the William Stafford Poetry Award. Recently, she won a Chapbook Award sponsored by the Kentucky Writers Coalition and
the Jim Wayne Miller Poetry award.
